Kanika Biography
Divya Venkatasubramaniam (born 3 July 1982), best known by her stage name Kanika, is an Indian film actress, occasional dubbing artist, playback singer, and TV anchor. Making her debut in the 2002 Tamil film Five Star, she went on to work in other South Indian film industries, including Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada, as well. She is perhaps best known for her performances as Eashwari in her debut film Five Star, Gayathri in Varalaru - History of Godfather and Thenmozhi in Autograph. She is currently making waves in the Malayalam film industry with back to back successful films Bhagyadevatha and Pazhassi Raja.
Kanika is a well known Indian actress, model, playback singer, dubbing artist, TV personality and qualified mechanical engineer. She has appeared in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam films. Kanika was born as Divya Venkatasubramaniam on 3rd July, 1982 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu to Mrs. Mr. Venkat Subramanian. Kanika attended the TVS Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Madurai and received the Tamil Nadu State Award for Educational Excellence in 1999.Kanika later earned a mechanical engineering degree from the prestigious BITS, Pilani.
Kanika participated in the Miss Chennai beauty pageant in the year 2001 and was crowned as the second runner up. The multitalented diva also appeared in many stage performances as a singer. Kanika emerged as a successful model and appeared in TV commercials and print advertisements for brands like ‘The Chennai Silks’, ‘Kalyan Sarees and Jewellers’, ‘Rathna Thanga Maligai’, ‘Tata Gold Plus’, ‘SPP Silks, Erode’ and ‘Aachi Masala’ etc.
Kanika made her film debut in Susi Ganesan’s 2002 mega hit ‘Five Star’ opposite Prasanna. Kanika plunged into Telugu cinema with ‘Ottesi Chepputanna’ and Kannada films with ‘Annavaru’, both released in the year 2003. Kanika refused to work in films directed by notable filmmakers like Shankar, P.C. Sreeram, Cheran etc in order to complete her education.
Kanika predominantly appeared in Tamil films including KS Ravikumar’s mega hit comedy ‘Aethiree’ alongside Madhavan, Sadha, Vivek, Rahman and Delhi Ganesh, Commercially successful and critically acclaimed Nation Film Award winner ‘Autograph’ alongside Sneha, Gopika and Mallika directed by Cheran, Keyaar’s ‘Dancer’ alongside Kutty and Robert and KS Ravikumar’s ‘Varalaru: History of Godfather’ alongside Ajith Kumar and Asin Thottumkal.
Kanika also starred in the Telugu remake of Tamil superhit ‘Autograph’. Titled ‘Naa Autograph’, the film was directed by S. Gopal Reddy and starred Ravi Teja, Gopika, Bhoomika Chawla, Mallik and Kanika. Kanika has also worked in a few Malayalam films, namely ‘Bhagyadevatha’ opposite Jayaram, ‘Pazhassi Raja’ alongside Mammootty, Sarath Kumar and Manoj K Jayan, ‘My Big Father’ opposite Jayaram and ‘Drona 2010’ opposite Mammootty. Her Malayalam film ‘Pazhassi Raja’ was a commercial and critical success and received eight Kerala Film State Awards, nine Annual Malayalam Movie Awards Dubai and three Asianet Film Awards.
Kanika has won several accolades for her versatile acting, including the AMMA Awards(Malayalam)- Best Actress 2009 for ‘Bhagyadevatha’, Asianet Film Awards 2010- Special Jury Award for ‘Pazhassiraja’ and ‘Bhagyadevatha’ and State Film Critics’ Awards 2009- Best actress for ‘Bhagyadevatha’.
Kanika has appeared on Television as the host of comedy show ‘Kalakka Povathu Yaaru’ on STAR Vijay, game show ‘Mega Thanga Vettai’, the annual Chutti Vikatan Children's Quiz Show both aired on Sun TV. She also played the lead role in popular serial ‘Thiruvilayadal’ telecasted on Sun TV. Besides being an actress, Kanika has also worked as a dubbing artist and a playback singer. She dubbed for Genelia D'Souza in John Mahendran ‘s‘Sachein’, Sadha in S. Shankar’s ‘Anniyan’ and Shriya Saran in S. Shankar’s ‘Sivaji: The Boss’, all in Tamil. She also did playback singing for ‘Engalukku’ featured in her debut film ‘Five Star’.
Kanika married a US based Software professional Shyam Radhakrishnan, who is the brother of well known actress Jaishree Chandrasekar. Kanika decided to take a respite from her film career to get settled with her husband in US. However she soon made a comeback with the Malayalam film ‘Bhagyadevatha’ for which she earned three Best Actress Awards. Kanika is expected to be seen in forthcoming Malayalam films ‘Meenakshi Kottaram’ and ‘Christian Brothers’.
